DAVID STEVENS REPLIES TO MY LETTER:

  Response to Turf Replacement Letter:

Dear Editor:

In this past Sunday's edition of the times, Mary McGarr needs to get off her soap box in reference to her comments about the artificial turf replacement at Rhodes Stadium.

She cannot actually believe that one field with natural grass can support four high school football teams, eight junior high football teams, soccer games, band competitions and other events held at the facility.

The cost alone for maintaining a natural grass playing surface for all these activities would be astronomical.  It's just a little more complicated than buying a riding lawnmower and hiring a person to mow and water the grass.

An artificial surface is the most reliable, practical surface for a multi use facility of this kind.  The money for the net surface replacement will be well spent, especially for a more natural type of surface like the fields used at Nebraska and other major universities and public school systems throughout the nation.

As far as her comments on the field replacements performed at all the high schools this past summer, it is evident that she has not one clue as to what she is talking about.  It needed to be done.  Kids were being injured just by jogging on the fields.  They were in dire need of repair and attention.  Hopefully now that the surfaces have been replaced the district will take the necessary steps to maintain them the way they should be maintained.

Again, it's not as simple as buying a lawn mower and watering the grass.  The last thing is this:  If you don't like the high taxes you are being charged, then move.  I for one have a child attending KISD schools and I want the best for her and all the students.  That is why I moved into this district six years ago.  You can't actually believe that you can have good schools and it not cost you anything.

Why don't you try and change the things that need to be changed, like the Robin Hood laws of this state.  It would actually be nice knowing that 100% of the school taxes that I pay would actually stay in my district.

So, Ms. McGarr, get a life and make changes at the state level and worry about your own lawn for a change
