KATY SELECTS HEADHUNTER

Katy ISD is negotiating a contract with a consultant from Beaumont to help administrators search for a new superintendent.

Trustees voted 5-1 at a special meeting last week to hire Bob Thompson of Lamar University at Beaumont as an outside consultant to the search.  Board member Stanley Thompson voted against the measure.

Mary McGarr had a prior engagement and could not attend the meeting, but says she would have voted against hiring Bob Thompson because "he has too many ties to the Texas Education Agency and Education commissioner Skip Meno."

"He's not what Katy's looking for," she says.

Board member Joe Kimmel says the district next will try to negotiate a contract with Thompson to lay out specifically what it expects from him.

"That includes interviewing various people in the district -- from administrators and teachers to principals and community members -- to build a profile of the kind of person that this district is interested in looking for," he says.

A specific time frame has not been worked out, Kimmel says, but that the process usually takes about 90 days.  Don Stacy, deputy superintendent for support services, has been serving as interim superintendent since Hugh Hayes left.
