Here’s a link to the first column in the series: Academic Preparation.

In the opening  column, we learned that about 40% of the high school graduates in Katy I.S.D. cannot be traced to enrollment in Texas colleges or universities.  This number would include a predictably small percentage of graduates who enrolled in universities outside of Texas.

We also learned that a similar amount of Katy I.S.D. graduates enrolled in both community colleges and universities with the bigger portion of these two categories being 4-year universities.  We also learned that there is fairly substantial disparity in the SAT performance levels of the graduates of the district with averages or percentages of students scoring above the state’s criterion that vary sharply between some of the high school campuses.

As we begin reporting more details today, let’s take another look at the SAT profiles of graduates in Katy I.S.D. as reported by high school campus by the Texas Education Agency for the Class of 2008.

Next, we are going to take a closer look at the academic profiles of the colleges or universities at which Katy I.S.D. graduates enrolled in the Fall 2009 as reported by the THECB.  That state agency produces an annual report showing the percentage of students in the enrolling freshman class at each public institution who earned degrees within six year.

While the THECB does report enrollment for private colleges, it does not report on the 6-year graduation rates (industry standard report) of these private institutions.

For community colleges, the THECB reports the percentage of students who earned a baccalaureate degree within six year and the percentage of students who earned an associated degree from a community college.

For 4-year universities, the THECB reports the percentage of students who earned a baccalaureate degree from that institution and it reports the percentage of students who left that university BUT earned a degree from another institution all within 6 years.

We know that 26% of the Katy I.S.D. graduates enrolled in community colleges.  Statewide, the THECB reports in its most recently available document that only 14.2% of those who enroll as freshmen in a community college taking 12 or more credit hours per semester go on to earn a baccalaureate degree from a 4-year university within six years.  The THECB reports that statewide only 11.3% of such students earn an associate degree from a community college.

As the subsequent table will show, there are eight most popular community colleges chosen by Katy I.S.D. graduates in Fall 2009.  Just over 10% of the total graduates of the district enrolled in Houston Community College and another almost 9% enrolled in the Lone Star College’s Cypress Fairbanks campus.

In the most recent report, just 12.6% of HCCS’ enrolling freshmen earned a university degree in six years and only 11.3% earned an associate degree. So, the most recent track record of HCCS as reported by the THECB is that 76% of its enrolling freshman do not earn either an associate or university degree within 6 years.

The record of the Lone Star College’s Cy-Fair campus is only marginally better in that the THECB reports that 68% of enrolling freshmen do not earn either degree within six years.

The THECB reports that 4.6% of Katy I.S.D. graduates enrolled in Blinn College in Fall 2009.  Of all the community colleges explicitly named in the THECB report, Blinn has the best track record for its enrolling freshmen subsequently earning a university degree (35.6%) or an associate degree (8.8%) within six years.

That means that at one of the more successful community colleges in Texas (at which under 5% of Katy I.S.D. graduates enroll), there are 56% of enrolling freshmen who do not earn a degree of any kind in six years.

Here’s a table reflecting these facts.

As previously noted, Katy I.S.D. produces extraordinarily well prepared high school graduates.  A look at where some of our graduates attend demonstrates this dramatically.

Just over 10% of the district’s graduates attend the University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University - both top tier universities.  We sent about two percent of our graduates to Texas Tech.  The table that will follow also shows the prestigious private universities in Texas where our graduates go including Rice, Baylor, and Trinity among others.

We send hundreds of students to four-year colleges that may be not recognized as top tier but which offer outstanding educational opportunities.

For instance, The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University have strong records of producing graduates among their enrolling freshmen - each at just under 80% in the most recent THECB report. Another 4-5% of students who enroll at those two institutions may not get a degree there, but do earn degrees elsewhere.

The next table allows you to look at the profile of each university where Katy I.S.D. sends graduates and see three facts from the most recent THECB report:

  1. The percent of enrolling freshmen who earned a degree at that institution within six years.

  2. The percent of enrolling freshmen who left the university but earned a degree somewhere else.

  3. The percent of enrolling freshmen who did not earn a degree in six years

Here’s that table:

It is important to note that none of these tables report on exactly how Katy I.S.D.’s enrolling freshmen performed at these universities.  The purpose of the tables is to show the record of the institution at which our freshmen enroll.  In the case of community colleges, the record of these institutions can be described as unsuccessful in producing graduates.  In the case of the universities, the record is hit and miss.

Subsequent articles in this series will report with great precision how Katy I.S.D. students who enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin performed.  Future articles will also report in great detail the significant disparity of academic skills of our high school students within high schools and between high schools.

The evidence will show that every high school including Seven Lakes, Taylor, and Cinco Ranch has students that have strong academic skills as well as students whose skills are extremely deficient.

Here are a series of tables that you look at the enrollment patterns of each high school campus in Katy I.S.D. as reported by the THECB for the Fall 2009.
