SUPERINTENDENT HAYES' PROPOSAL FOR ARTIFICIAL TURF REPLACEMENT:

December 14, 1992

(This proposal was presented to the School Board at the last meeting of the Board before the Christmas break.  (No one is paying attention to things at that time!)

The existing artificial surface of Rhodes stadium was installed in 1981.  Since that time, the stadium has been used for numerous events, other than football, and by thousands of students and patrons.  We previously provided two years (1990-1991 and 1991-1992) of documented reservations and events.

At this point, it appears the turf has approached the end of serviceable life expectancy.  Attached is an evaluation report of the turf conducted by Southwest Recreational Industries, Inc., in early 1992.  This report documents seam separation, excessive pile wear and also shock attenuation.  All three factors will continue to get worse with time.  Therefore, it would appear that replacement of the surface is the best measure.

We previously provided documentation which compared the cost comparison of replacement versus a newly constructed grass field.  We can review those costs again at the Board meeting.

Impact Statement:  Replacement of the artificial turf will provide a safe surface for the multitude of events annually held at Rhodes Stadium.  It is expected that with proper care the new surface should have a service life of ten-twelve years.  [It didn't--it was more like 9 years.MM]

It is recommended:  That the Board authorize the administration to publicly bid a new artificial surface for Rhodes Stadium and effect other associated repairs for lighting and drainage.

Respectfully submitted,

Hugh C. Hayes
