UNDERHANDED TACTICS USED BY CHRISTIE TO GET ELECTED:
LOCAL BOARD MEMBERS DENY
ENDORSEMENT OF JACK CHRISTIE, QUESTION HIS INTEGRITY
From the Houston Chronicle
HOUSTON:
Members of local District 6 school boards are denouncing State Board of Education
candidate Jack Christie for his deceptive advertising flyer that is appearing late in the
campaign. The flyer claims endorsement from
entire school boards, which is a violation of law.
Individual members may offer endorsement and many have done so, but their
endorsements are not necessarily for Christie
Terri Leo, Christie’s challenger,
has sought and received the endorsement of most conservative Republicans in District 6.
State Representatives Talmadge Heflin, Joe Nixon, Gary Elkins, and Kyle Janek as
well as Harris County Commissioner Jerry Eversole and US Congressman Steve Stockman have
all endorsed Leo. Some of the local school
board members within District 6 endorsing Leo’s candidacy include Susan Smith of Alief
ISD, Ken Burton and Mary McGarr of Katy ISD and Al Martinez of Cy-Fair ISD.
Leo also is endorsed by all the area Republican State Executive Committee members,
except one who is making no endorsement and by more than 134 Republican Precinct Chairmen.
Mr. Burton, noting that
Christie’s questionable endorsements place several school boards in the position of having
violated an ethical code, said, “One wonders if there is anything that Jack Christie will
not do or say to get re-elected!”
One of the Fort Bend school board
members who is supporting Christie said that the Fort Bend Board told him that he could
not say that their Board was endorsing him. Board members from several districts are
demanding that Christie issue a public apology.
“Christie’s fabrication of
endorsements by phrase manipulation is untenable,”
said Mary McGarr, Katy ISD board member.
I was incensed when I viewed the flyer that appears to give my endorsement for a
candidate that I would never support.
“Christie should be running on the liberal Democratic ticket, and if anyone were paying
attention to his voting record, that would be his situation,” claimed McGarr.
Burton is also skeptical of Christie’s use of unauthorized endorsements and said,
“The man deliberately altered the Chronicle’s endorsement of his candidacy by
eliminating the words “a moderate” in the flyers he mailed to social conservatives in the
Katy area. What happened to Jack’s
honesty?”
Cypress-Fairbanks ISD board
members reported that the question of endorsements for any candidate has never been before
their board. Of the seven board members, Al
Martinez is endorsing Terri Leo, and George Edward, Max Moss and Dr. William O’Brien are
making no endorsements. The positions of the
other three are unknown.
Alief
ISD board member, Susan Smith said, “Jack Christie has shown a flagrant disregard for the
truth and for the voters. Texas school
children need role models who demonstrate honesty and integrity.
Christie’s use of deception and manipulation is not the lesson school children need
to be taught.” Jeanne Perdue, Alief ISD board
member said she has made no endorsement in the State Board of Education race.
In another mail-out, Christie
targeted Party liberals and labeled his opponent as a “radical right” candidate.
This language counters his avowed statements in his other mail-out where he claims
to be a “long-time conservative Republican.”
McGarr, noting that Leo has
maintained her conservatism with regard to educational issues throughout the campaign,
questions Christie’s vacillating stance. “He
cannot be a liberal, a moderate, and a conservative all at the same time if he is also
going to be truthful.” she said.
