ATTORNEY GENERAL ON THE USE OF THE COMMON CORE CURRICULUM IN TEXAS:

6.17.14 – 11:14 A. M.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott just issued his opinion on Sen. Dan Patrick’s request:  Re: Use of the Common Core Standards Initiative by Texas school districts to teach state standards. (RQ-1175-GA)

The entire Opinion GA-1067 from Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is excellent and makes it absolutely clear:

“Texas school districts are required to provide instruction in the essential knowledge and skills at appropriate grade levels, and pursuant to subsection 28.002 (b-3) of the Education Code, they may not use the Common Core State Standards Initiative to comply with this requirement.”

I particularly like the last paragraph on P. 3 of the Opinion when the TAG basically tells TASB that their briefing’s argument is “baseless.”

Thank you, Greg Abbott. You have done a great service to preserve Texas state law (i.e., Texas Education Code) which requires Texas public schools (including charters and home-rule districts) to teach the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) adopted by the elected members of the Texas State Board of Education.
