HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON?

Recently some parents have expressed concern about the psychological testing that occurs in our public schools.  Perhaps it's been going on longer than you think. This citizen was definitely on to something...

Check out this letter to the editor of The Katy Times on August 31, 1986.  That would be THIRTY YEARS AGO!!!

Curriculum Concerns

Dear Editor:

I am concerned about the non-academic curricula that have entered our public schools across the country.  Specifically, I am concerned about the counseling curriculum that is currently in vogue and its effect on our elementary age children.  I would like the parents of these aged children to consider the following questions:

*Is your child involved in group psychological counseling as part of a counseling curriculum?

*What is the philosophy behind this type of curriculum"

*Have you reviewed the topics and material used in your child's counseling curriculum

*Do you believe these topics would be appropriate for group discussion:  unhappy family life, family conflicts, divorce, authority, alternate lifestyles, lying, anger, drugs and alcohol, sex, death, and suicide?

*Are you familiar with the various psychological counseling techniques such as role play, behavior modification, sensitivity, training, and relaxation techniques?

*Given your child is "normal," why does he need group counseling?

*Does your child have an individual file containing his psychological counseling work sheets?  Are his work sheets brought home?

*Do you believe it is the business of our educational system to probe the psyche and question the values of your child?

*Have you given your informed consent to have your child counseled either individually or in a group?

*Pupil Rights Amendment or Hatch Amendment, 1978

Thank you,
