HOW WELL DO KISD STUDENTS DO ON THE SAT?

In 1995, as a member of the Katy School Board, I took issue with the designation of Seniors into "high honor graduates" and "honor graduates" as anyone with a 4. could be considered a "high honor graduate" (and wear the cord that signified that honor at the graduation ceremonies) or with a 3.5 could be an "honor graduate."

My contention was that since our grading system went to 4.5, the cut offs should be at 4.3 and 4. instead of 4. and 3.5   A 3.5 average is a plain "B" average! Such an average does not need to be recognized at a graduation ceremony, and in fact, it is embarrassing to do so!

I also believed that if one were an "honors graduate" in Katy ISD (our being such a fine school district) then one should certainly qualify to be accepted by our state's two finest public universities - the University of Texas and Texas A&M.

Since I had access to this information, I asked for it and drew up this little chart.  I imagine that the numbers are not as high now as they were 20 years ago!

                                                                      KATY ISD 1995 GRADUATING SENIORS

Taylor High School                       Katy High School                  Mayde Creek High School

High Honor Graduates       43                                               37                                                     35

Number Able to

score* 1200 on SAT            38 (88%)                                    19 (56%)                                          13 (37%)

(*Score required to

obtain admission

to A&M and UT in

1995)

Shouldn't parents expect ALL of our High Honor graduates to be able to make 1200 on the SAT and to be able to go to our state's two finest public universities?
