KMAC POSTING ON KISD WEBSITE:

Katy Management of Automated Curriculum (KMAC)

KMAC is the brainchild of Dr. Elizabeth Clark and her team in Curriculum and Instruction Department. Dr. Clark’s idea was to create an electronic system that contained the entire curriculum for teachers to utilize in teaching our students from AP Calculus to Kindergarten art activities. Xpediant’s role in KMAC was programming and project management. We worked with the “big thinkers” to turn this vision into a reality. The system includes the following:

  • Teacher lesson planning system where teachers can share and collaborate lesson plans online
  • Consistency in curriculum district wide to create the same educational experience for EVERY student in Katy ISD
  • Proactive planning of lesson plans allowing teachers to spend time educating students instead of reinventing the lesson plan
  • Lessons and testing for students to use helping Katy ISD do its part in minimizing paper usage and associated costs of production
  • Online resources
  • Ongoing updates and improvements to provide the features requested by teachers, principals and many others
  • To date Katy ISD has spent $1.65 million dollars on KMAC with Xpediant. As part of the contract, the district has full ownership, rights and control over the KMAC application and processes. The district has applied for a patent and is looking at opportunities to market this application to other school districts.

Katy Independent School District (ISD)

Our collaborative projects with Katy ISD are a testament to our tag line “Excellence through Experience”. Since our contract initiation in 2002 with Katy ISD, we have strategized, implemented and maintained hundreds of technology focused projects with the same goal for all – to provide Katy ISD students, faculty and parents a dynamic user experience for the day-to-day activities associated with educating children. The one common thread that runs through all the projects Xpediant manages is technology. Technology is an entity that exists and lives very prominently in everyone’s lives. The word technology means different things to different people and to Xpediant, it is defined as the vehicle used to communicate and facilitate educational processes. We leverage computers, telephone systems, video, web sites (both external to the public and internal for administrators and teachers), enterprise level servers, all the hardware and software and the personnel to make everything work in synergy for 54 locations within Katy ISD. Xpediant’s 37 experienced consultants and technicians allow Katy ISD, the students, parents and faculty to learn and work in the technology age and places Katy ISD in a proactive setting for all school districts to model.

Selection Process

Since our contract initiation in 2002 with Katy ISD, we have worked on hundreds of projects and continue to maintain and develop new projects as needs arise. When Katy ISD selected us as the vendors for their technology needs, they utilized the Centralized Master Bidders List (CMBL) and the Catalog Information Systems Vendor List (CISV), which are maintained by the Texas Building and Procurement Commission. The TBPC is responsible for qualifying these vendors and verifying their credentials. Xpediant has been listed on both of these approved vendor lists since 2001.

Project Management

Xpediant provides a wide array of services to the district including executive level technology organizational consulting, programming, project management, systems engineering, network engineering and workstation support. Because of the district’s growth it has been necessary to grow the resources to assist in running technology. The technology world creates additional demands from viruses to software updates that need to be incorporated to all technology projects as well.

One of the most important components of a successful outsourcing agreement such as this is to create a seamless union between the outsourcing company and the internal staff of Katy ISD. Each Xpediant member has an explicit job within Katy ISD. It is crucial that when a teacher or student in a classroom has a technology-related problem, he/she can access the proper resource to assist in resolving this issue. The focus becomes on providing the service in a timely manner. Whether the resource is employed by Katy ISD or Xpediant is irrelevant to the individual needing the technology issue resolved. We have carefully developed a united technology department comprised of both groups with clear titles to ensure efficient and effective service delivery throughout Katy ISD.

The Core Projects

We have worked on hundreds of projects and continue to maintain and develop new projects as needs arise. The technology world creates these demands from viruses to software updates. These are an overview of the many projects Xpediant’s collaborative effort with Katy ISD where we have proven our tag line of “Excellence through Experience”.

  • In the 2001-2002 school year, the district spent $245,249 with Xpediant. These initial projects covered the implementation of the district’s email system and the infrastructure for the district’s KMAC system.
  • In the 2002-2003 school year, the district spent $1,931,804 with Xpediant. In this year the district was focused on rebuilding the technology infrastructure to better support the district’s rapid growth. Major projects included building a centralized Redundant Data Center, standardizing applications in the classrooms, building a reliable, stable and fast infrastructure with which to support district growth and applications. The three components of the KMAC system (KMAC, Adcon and KMS) were released in version 1.0. A new electronic grade book system and report card and progress report system was implemented.
  • In the 2003-2004 school year, the district spent $3,933,618 with Xpediant. In this year the district focused on implementing a new district wide phone system which included phones in each classroom, implemented a new student management system to handle student schedules, attendance, textbook, heath and discipline management. Updated versions of the three components of the KMAC system (KMAC, Adcon and KMS) were released in version 2.0.
  • In the 2004-2005 school year, the district spent $4,482,148 with Xpediant. In this year the district focused on leveraging system systems and infrastructure from previous years to bring data directly to teachers, administrators and parents. A reporting portal was built so that teachers and staff members could quickly access data quickly from the classroom. All district forms were converted to electronic data flow processes to reduce printing and manual processing costs. Updated versions of the three components of the KMAC system (KMAC, Adcon and KMS) were released in version 3.0.
  • To date in the 2005-2006 school year, the district has spent $2,811,799 with Xpediant. Major focus this year have been pulling data together from multiple systems to allow teachers and staff members to do in-depth data analysis, creating a centralized data warehouse and building and implementing applications that automate previously manual processes. Updated versions of the three components of the KMAC system (KMAC, Adcon and KMS) are being released in version 4.0.

Specialized Applications

Take for instance our work with Katy ISD. Katy ISD was in

need of a complete replacement with a system utilizing current

technology that could provide data sharing with other vendor

purchased packages within the Katy school district. The necessary

changes were made and now the district’s needs are met

with advanced and specialized applications.

Katy ISD currently runs 150 software titles. Software applications

are downloaded on the computers of the administration

building according to user requirements and on all campus

computers depending on elementary, junior high or high school

level.
