KATY ISD ADMITS USING COMMON CORE WORKSHEETS:

Common Core Information

For those seeking clarification regarding the use of Common Core:

Texas has not adopted the Common Core. The Texas state standards are the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. In fact, House Bill 462 prohibits the state from adopting the Common Core. Therefore, Katy ISD has not adopted the Common Core.

Katy ISD uses the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as standards to develop the District curriculum. Textbooks and instructional materials are utilized in our classrooms based on their alignment to the TEKS. The community participates in the selection of District materials by serving on committees which review multiple resources for their alignment to the TEKS. While some instructional resources may overlap with the Common Core standards, they are by no means used as an attempt to implement the Common Core. The intent of HB 462 is not to prevent the use of materials where the two standards may overlap, it is to prohibit the outright adoption of the national Common Core standards.

Statement (November 12, 2014) from Katy ISD website:  http://www.katyisd.org/Pages/Common-Core-Info.aspx

It's hard for me to believe that the Katy school district is taking this position!  At first they said they weren't using Common Core.  Now they say that Common Core materials are 68% aligned with the TEKS!  So which is it?  Were they lying then or are they lying now? I'm guessing it's probably both! The superintendent doesn't care what Governor-Elect Abbott has said about the use of Common Core (and that includes all aspects of it)-- BUT it is Illegal to use it in Texas public schools! Too bad no one has the gumption to enforce the law.

Here is a copy of a lesson from a Katy ISD elementary school that was used last spring:
