LETTER SENT TO FLEETWOOD, BARKER'S LANDING, THORNWOOD, AND MEMORIAL THICKET RESIDENTS:

Below you will find a copy of the flyer that, in my opinion, helped get Judy Snyder elected in 1996 (beating Robert Shaw 1,262 to 615) after she lost in 1995 to Joe Adams (1,459 to 949). In my opinion she got herself elected because she fooled the people who live in her OWN neighborhood! Notice the similarities between this flyer and Mr. Duhon's letter.

THERE IS NOTHING TRUTHFUL IN THE COMMENTS BELOW!!! The 1995-1996 Katy School Board NEVER "considered tearing down and building a new Wolfe Elementary in Green Trails off South Fry Rd." I know that because I was on that School Board, and also because, after the election, Ken Burton, the incumbent Board member who lost because of this flyer, polled the Board, according to Robert's Rules of Order, and each Board member, sitting at the dais in the Regular Board meeting stated that "the Board had never considered tearing down and building a new Wolfe Elementary School..."

There is also the issue of Joe Kimmel using this issue to get rid of Ken Burton.  Joe Kimmel had lost to Ken Burton the first time he ran.  It would appear that he carried a grudge about that.  Judy Snyder needed an issue to turn out votes, since she already knew from the previous year that no one was going to vote for her in her own neighborhood,  so they decided to use this issue to accomplish that goal.  The MAIN reason this area wanted to get Judy Snyder on the Board is that they wanted their children out of Mayde Creek High School.  I still have a drawer full of letters from all of them, with all sorts of reasons being given for wanting the change, but the one that was of most importance to them, was that they didn't like their children going to school with the Mexicans that were populating MCHS!  I wanted the area to move back because I never wanted them to leave Taylor in the first place.  The only reason they were all being bused to MCHS instead of Taylor where they had gone for many years was that a mother of a swimmer, lobbied the school board to move the whole area to MCHS because she wanted her daughter to be the best and that wasn't going to happen at Taylor, so she wanted her daughter in a new school.  I watched all that happen in the late 1980's.  Anyway, she was successful, her daughter excelled, and she got a scholarship to Rice and a whole neighborhood suffered. The thing is, there was an  item on the Board agenda in March to move that area to Taylor.  There were four board members who were ready to vote for the move, Joe Kimmel, Larry Moore, James Peters, and me. That's all they needed.  But instead of doing that, they chose to use the issue to get rid of Ken Burton because he didn't think they should move.  How's that for petty meanness?

"Dear (Thornwood or Fleetwood or Memorial Thicket or Barkers Landing) Residents:

As you may know, Judy Snyder, a resident of Fleetwood is running for one of the positions on the KISD board.  We are very thankful for her taking on this job and desperately need [her] on the board.

At the present, we have one other resident from this area, Joe Kimmel.  Joe lives in Barker's Landing.  He is one of the people on the School Board who are very concerned about our area... We feel that James Peters and Jean Richardson are the best choices for the other two positions.

Within the next year, the board will be deciding what to do about Wolfe Elementary.  They are currently considering tearing down and building a new Wolfe in Green Trails off South Fry Rd.  A new elementary school is planned for the North Fry Rd. area which would drain off 2/3 of the students who currently attend Wolfe, leaving only the 230 students from our Memorial area neighborhoods in attendance there.

We need representation on the board who feel strongly that our area needs a neighborhood elementary school and will fight to keep it for us.  Many ideas have been suggested for Wolfe, including making it a magnet school for accelerated students in the district.

This affects us all, even if you don't have school age children.  The loss of Wolfe would be devastating to our property values, and few people would be willing to buy a house knowing they would have to bus their school children out to Fry Rd. to go to elementary school.

Voter turnout in the area has typically been low.  We can't afford to let that happen this time.  We can help ourselves and send a strong message to KISD by taking just five minutes to vote for the people who will support us.  Don't be ignored! Take your voting obligation seriously.  Go to Wolfe on Saturday, May 4 and vote for the .... three J's--Judy Snyder, James Peters and Jean Richardson!!  There will be no run-off election.

Sincerely,

Friends of Wolfe Elementary
