LETTER TO DR. JACK CHRISTIE ON UIL SUNDAY COMPETITION:

                                                                 February 6, 1995

Dr. Jack Christie

Chairman

State Board of Education

Austin, TX

Dear Dr. Christie:

Recently I have become aware of an amendment to a UIL rule that would permit regional and state tournament directors to schedule competition on Sundays without the mutual consent of all schools involved.

First let me say that I do not agree with the idea of allowing any UIL competition to occur on a Sunday.  I would urge you to reconsider that possibility.  I also do not approve of any UIL participation that would occur without agreement between and approval by the schools and the coaches who are involved.

My information on the matter reveals that UIL director Bailey Marshall has indicated that Sunday's being a day of religious observation is not an issue of consequence in UIL matters.  Perhaps Mr. Bailey's priorities need attention also.

Thank you for your consideration of the views of those you serve.

Sincerely,

Mary McGarr
