MAYDE CREEK HIGH SCHOOL:

Mayde Creek High School was built in 1984 and opened with the eighth and ninth grades. (Trust me when I say that they REALLY didn't need this high school yet!)  By the 1986-87 academic year it held the 9th, 10th and 11th grades.  The first class of students graduated in 1988.  Students who had previously been enrolled at Taylor High School from the Mayde Creek area were allowed to stay until the 1987-1988 school year when all students from the Mayde Creek area went back to Mayde Creek High School

MCHS was built before it was needed in response to the fact that Katy High School had been losing football games to Taylor High School, and Katy old timers decided that the reason was that Taylor High School had too many students.  Once that assertion was made and accepted by Old Katy, Mayde Creek High School's construction began in haste because Old Katy has always, except for a brief time  in the 1980's, had control of the Katy ISD school board.

The football coach at Taylor High School, Donnie Laurence, had been promised when he was hired, that the District would not open another high school until there were enough students to fill it.

Unfortunately, as is common in KISD, one cannot trust the administration's promises. When all of the students from the Mayde Creek zones were moved out of Taylor, the school had only 1,200 students, which left it mighty short on students who wanted to play football.  That was as planned.

Donnie Laurence, who really had been a great football coach and loved the Katy area and Taylor High School, left for greener football pastures, and who could blame him?  When he left, the superintendent and the Taylor principal hired Bubba Fife as his replacement.  Coach Fife had a record in Tulosa-Midway in the Corpus Christi area of 0 and 10!

Taylor has been punished for its winning ways over Katy High School for thirty years.  No respite in sight!

That situation will continue until parents of Taylor (and Mayde Creek and Seven Lakes and Cinco Ranch and Tompkins) High schools start voting in school board elections for people who are not beholden to Old Katy.  Wouldn't take much, but just try and turn them out!
