MCDONALD JUNIOR HIGH:

From a column in the May 20, 1990 Katy Times, it is stated that "McDonald was built on 21 acres and is 125,000 square feet and will have a capacity of 1,200.  It was named after T. H. McDonald, a former high school principal and district administrator.  The school has a state of the art computer lab, two gyms, a synthetic running track, and four lighted tennis courts."

School board fires teacher accused of having sex with McDonald student

In an expected move, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees fired McDonald Junior High math teacher Emily Willis on March 21, nearly three weeks after she was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old McDonald student in west Harris County.

By Dustin Wenzel | Updated

The 6-0 decision - with Trustee Eric Duhon absent for business - came at the board's monthly work study meeting.

Willis, 28, was in her first year as a teacher and had a clean record when she entered the school district. Her probationary one-year contract was slated to be up for renewal this summer.

District spokesperson Kris Taylor said previously that Willis will not be allowed back on any of the school's 27 campuses.

The firing was the second high-profile case involving Katy ISD teachers this academic year. Alexander Elementary teacher Jennifer Silva - who admitted taping shut a student's mouth in violation of district policy - was given the remainder of her annual salary after being terminated last August.

Willis, who is out of jail on a $10,000 bond, is set to be arraigned April 4 in the Harris County 339th District Court.

KATY (Covering Katy) – September 26, 2015  Saturday

What’s believed to be gang-related activity at McDonald Junior High School has resulted in up to five students being transferred to the Opportunity Awareness Center and suspensions for other students.

Over the weekend Covering Katy has received persistent reports of an incident that happened early in the week. We are told a student, who wanted to be a member of a gang, allowed himself to be beaten by other gang members as part of an initiation into the group. The beating took place on campus during school hours, sources say.

McDonald Junior High School is located near Clay Road and North Mason Road.

It is unclear if parents have been notified of the incident. It’s also unclear how badly the boy was beaten.

Katy ISD Confirms Covering Katy’s Integrity And McDonald Junior’s Gang Activity

By Dennis Spellman - September 28, 2015  Tuesday

KATY (Covering Katy) – One full week after a gang-related beating on the campus of T.H. McDonald Junior High School, parents have been notified about the incident involving as many as 10 students. A letter was sent to parents from the school’s principal Monday morning after Covering Katy broke the story Saturday using anonymous sources that we fully vetted for accuracy.

Following publication of our story, Covering Katy was accused of making up the story by school district apologists. The comments were vile and some were threatening.

It is a serious decision for a news organization to use anonymous sources. We did so because our sources were believable and we knew central administrators would never tell us the truth if we waited for them to respond. In fact, the district’s communication department still has not responded to our request for comment on this important story. Even now we have more information than we’ve reported so far, but are cautiously working to confirm every detail.

This situation confirms suspicions of many parents that the Katy ISD school board tolerates a culture of secrecy at the central administrative offices. Don’t let anyone put the blame for this lack of communication on the principal of McDonald Junior High. Before he sends a letter to parents confirming gang activity on campus, he has to get approval from the superintendent’s office, and clearly that approval did not come until Covering Katy informed parents first. We will soon have the official police report, so the administration had to come clean.

Until Covering Katy started reporting on this type of behavior, intimidation in Katy worked. Look around, EVERY other media outlet in town is either afraid to report the truth, or mistakenly believes that supporting bad behavior will help them financially. District protectors run a widespread intimidation machine, which was partially on display for the world to see over the weekend. The vilest comments came in private messages to a private Facebook account.

To this day there are well known Katy organizations that send press releases to every other media outlet in greater Houston, but not to Covering Katy. We are outwardly attacked by the intimidation machine and subtlety punished by those who believe it’s in their best interest to keep the truth from being reported. When those tactics fail, they get a sponsor to put pressure on us, but we haven’t buckled, and we won’t. That’s why we have the largest audience of any media outlet in Katy. People come where they can get real, truthful news.

Below is the letter that was released to McDonald Junior High School parents this morning. It’s the letter that should have been released a week ago.

September 28, 2015

Dear McDonald Junior High Parents/Guardians and Staff,

On Monday, September 21, 2015, McDonald Junior High staff was made aware of a physical altercation that occurred in the boy’s restroom involving approximately 10 male students. An investigation by Katy ISD police is still pending. However, at this time, it is believed that one individual voluntarily agreed to be physically assaulted by the other students involved, as part of a gang-related activity.

No arrests have been made regarding this incident, however, all of the students involved have received disciplinary action and were suspended for three days in accordance with the District’s Disciplinary Management Plan. Six of the 10 students were also referred to the Opportunity Awareness Center, a Katy ISD discipline alternative campus.

Please know that this behavior is not reflective of McDonald Junior High standards, and such incidents are taken very seriously. The safety of our students and staff is top priority, and we will continue to work to ensure a safe learning environment for all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Dr. Kenneth Cummings

Principal, McDonald Junior High

KATY (FOX 26) - Katy ISD confirms that two students from McDonald Junior High School were arrested at school Tuesday.

One student was charged with assault of a public servant, the other for an alleged terroristic threat against a school district employee.

FOX 26 spoke with the mother of the student charged with assault.

She says her son had taken video of a student being beaten up as part of a gang initiation at the school.

When a teacher discovered the video, Kennie Solano says the teacher snatched the phone away from him.

Then her son allegedly got into a physical altercation trying to get his phone back.

Solano said her son already served a 3-day suspension for taking video of the bathroom brawl.

Katy ISD has not given any more details about the student arrested for terroristic threat, but released the following statement:

In connection with an ongoing investigation regarding an alleged gang-related incident that occurred on September 21, two McDonald Junior High students were arrested on campus this morning. One arrest was in relation to an alleged physical altercation between a student and teacher that took place on Monday, September 21, 2015 following that incident at approximately 10 a.m. The teacher filed charges against that student for assault on a public servant.

The other student mentioned was arrested today for an alleged terroristic threat against a school district employee which was made on Tuesday, September 22, 2015.

A Katy ISD Police Department investigation concerning both of these arrests is still ongoing at this time.
