No one likes to talk about methane gas leaks. It makes those who are vulnerable to such leaks not sleep at night.
Bet you haven't even heard of the biggest methane gas leak ever that happened two years ago in California, have you?
That's because the media/government/oil and gas industry doesn't want you to worry your pretty little head about such mundane matters.
But I think you should. The methane was stored, just like that south of the City of Katy, in old caverns that had previously held methane gas and then were re-used.
The Aliso Canyon explosion two years ago spewed 100,000 tons of methane gas into the atmosphere. They tried seven times to contain it and couldn't. Eight thousand people had to abandon their homes.

LATIMES STAFF: Please put some resources delving into Governor Brown's filial and financial ties to SoCalGas and Sempra (his sister Kathleen Brown is on the Board of Sempra and part of a law firm that represents the oil and gas lobby). This kleptocracy and poisoning people of Porter Ranch is Governor Brown's real legacy. He worked harder on cap and trade (creating a market so big companies can pollute and poison more), than declaring a state of emergency for the largest methane leak in history.

Now wait a minute.... this gas field has been there for many decades... the houses were built long after the previous leak in the 1970s which took weeks to cap... I absolutely abhor those who are johnny come lately s and demand someone who was well established before you moved in must cease operations because you moved into the neighbourhood...take it up with the builder or the councilmen who approved the homes..
Also, this is a gas reserve, so that the environmentalists can have thier gas fired plants in the winter and everyone can have clean efficient gas heaters in the winter....

Yes, this is all about $ and that is no different than you or I. The reason people bought in this corner of the SFV and next to this polluter was because of affordability and how much of a home the home buyers got with their purchase. Unfortunately for these buyers their luck ran out against being exposed to a possible disaster related to the SOCALGAS plant next door. Now, if these buyers don't like their future chances against a similar disaster or worse, these homeowners could sell, but at a loss this time. Just simple economics.

they had a similar leak in 1975. cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=DS19750121.2.14 so why buy the house if you have a problem with the gas wells.... they pump the gas in to store it... and the wells have survived the 1933 quake, the 71 quake and the northridge quake...and several others.. so the earthquake statemetn is a red herring

They have been doing this here for more than half a century and some johnny come lately s want them gone.. the homes went up in the last 20-25 years...decades after the last well leak... how about personal responsibility

Maybe they should shut it down and turn off all the gas supplies to the valley residents to give them something fresh to complain about while they freeze in their darkened houses this winter.

The first good idea of I've heard, if I'm the gas company, I say SHUT HER DOWN! That way residents feel safe and California can buy more coal fired electricity from the states that surround it! But hey, we got rid of that evil gas storage facility! HAHA, stupid California Liberals...think they can run their homes on solar power 24 hours a day, haha. Let them try.
