PRINCIPAL PUNISHES STUDENT FOR ATTENDING FUNERAL:

KHOU: Mayde Creek Jr. Punishes Boy For Attending Funeral – No Comment From Katy ISD

May 10, 2015

KATY, TEXAS (KHOU 11) – A family facing a major tragedy is accusing the Katy ISD school district of making things worse.

Christine Barr says the district is refusing to excuse her 12 year old son’s absence to attend his young cousin’s funeral.

“We were told that the funeral would not be excused,” said Barr. “It would be unexcused unless it was a ‘nuclear’ family member or a grandparent.”

Barr’s son attends Mayde Creek Junior High. He missed school to go to the funeral of Fiona “Kitty” Carroll, the 5 year old girl who tragically drowned at a Kemah marina last month.

Barr says the district made a mistake and counted her son absent on several days when he was actually in school. Barr says the school ended up excusing him for the days that originally counted as missing, but refused to allow him to miss class for the service.
