STATE OF THE DISTRICT SPEECH BY ALTON FRAILEY:

Superintendent Frailey Delivers State of the District Address

Celebrates students' achievements, recognizes staff's accomplishments

Today Katy ISD Superintendent Alton Frailey spoke to hundreds of Katy community members, dignitaries, and staff during his annual State of the District Address. Along with a snapshot of the District's endless accomplishments and current enrollment growth, Frailey shared with attendees Katy ISD's highly successful BEAM (Because Everyone's Attitude Matters) initiative.

"It is our commitment to engage employees, students, parents and our entire community," said Frailey in reference to the BEAM initiative based on the belief that everyone's attitude matters in building a culture of educational excellence supported by a nurturing, respectful, and safe environment for students and employees. "Like a lighthouse, the BEAM initiative provides a strong foundation for students that helps them withstand waves and turbulence encountered in their development and being."

During the address, Frailey shared some of the District's major accomplishments, such as being recognized on the College Board AP Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work and increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher, and being recognized as the 60th largest district in the nation. Just this fall, Katy ISD welcomed its 70,000th student.

"The purpose of a state of the district, it is to update the community on where we have been and the current reality of the District," said Frailey. "However, I also like to share the big wins from our students as they are something in which the entire community can be proud."

Katy ISD students surpassed state and national averages in SAT and ACT test scores, 80 percent of the students who took AP exams received a score of 3 or higher, and the Class of 2014 was awarded $22 million in scholarships, among other accomplishments.

Attendees also enjoyed special guest speaker Jamie Vollmer, author of the highly acclaimed book 'Schools Cannot Do It Alone' and award-winning champion of public education.
